Well, this one is going crazy. Even though the smartwatch market barely exists, but it already looks like that this space is going to be over-crowded even before it’s created. It all started with Apple’s rumored iWatch, and even before we managed to get more details on that front, this space exploded with the rumors of Google, Samsung and LG trying their hands at similar devices as well.
Now, according to a latest report in the Wall Street Journal, Microsoft too is working on the designs for a “touch-enabled watch device”. This information was given given to the WSJ by some executives at a company that supplies parts to Microsoft.
It’s being said that Microsoft has asked it’s suppliers in Asia to send components for a watch-like device. One of the executives is believed to have met Microsoft’s R&D team at their headquarters in Redmond. Another executive told the website that Microsoft has requested 1.5-inch displays from it’s suppliers.
Even though the concept of a smartwatch is not new, but there hardly any devices in this segment that can be termed as successful, except the recently launched Pebble smartwatch. The Pebble smartwatch was started as a Kickstarter project and managed to raise over $10 million. The device recently went on sale and almost all the people who have used the device till now, are all praises for it.
The Pebble smartwatch uses Bluetooth to pair with an iOS or Android smartphone and once it’s done, the watch alerts the user for incoming calls, text messages, emails, etc. The smartwach even comes with apps that can measure health metrics or golf strokes.
With such rumors coming out every now and then, one wonders if wearable technology is indeed the next big thing and if the research firm Gartner is to be believed, it might we be, as the firm expects the wearable technology market to be a $10 billion industry by 2016.
