Microsoft Sells Over 100 Million Windows 8 Licenses, Confirms Windows Blue Update In 2013

Windows 8 might be receiving mixed reviews from the masses, but it has sold in large numbers nonetheless. Confirming the same today, Microsoft announced that its latest operating system, Windows 8 has sold over a 100 million licenses since it’s launch in October last year.
Out of the 100 million Windows 8 licences sold, 60 million were sold last year, while Microsoft has managed to sell nearly 40 million licenses since January this year, averaging at about 10 million licences per month this year.
Announcing the numbers, Tami Reller, Microsoft CMO/CFO, said in an interview,
We recently surpassed the 100 million licenses sold mark for Windows 8. This number includes Windows licenses that ship on a new tablet or PC, as well as upgrades to Windows 8. This is up from the 60 million license number we provided in January. We’ve also seen the number of certified devices for Windows 8 and Window RT grow to 2,400 devices, and we’re seeing more and more touch devices in the mix.
When asked about the declining PC sales, Reller said that the PC-market is very much alive and is rapidly evolving to include new convertible devices and amazing new touch laptops, and all-in-ones.
Discussing Microsoft’s plans for Windows Blue, Reller said that the Windows Blue update will be available to the users later this year.
It will deliver the latest new innovations across an increasingly broad array of form factors of all sizes, display, battery life and performance, while creating new opportunities for our ecosystem. It will provide more options for businesses, and give consumers more options for work and play. The Windows Blue update is also an opportunity for us to respond to the customer feedback that we’ve been closely listening to since the launch of Windows 8 and Windows RT. -Tami Reller
Commenting on the progress made by Windows Store, Reller said that Windows Store has increased 6x since launch. According to Reller, Windows Store has registered over 250 million Store apps downloaded in the first six months, while 90% of its app catalog is  downloaded every month.
